It is likely that you are familiar with health & safety, and moving & handling issues in your place of work. But, we often throw caution to wind regarding Health and Safety during recreation time and while playing sport. Golf too has its hazards and dangerous occurrences that sometimes, unfortunately have been fatal on or near a golf course. Many tragedies are preventable.

Ensure that everyone is well clear of your swing. A careless swing can hit spectators and others. Hidden stones and objects can accidentally be hit by a club from the rough and bunkers.

Lightning has caused a number of injuries and fatalities to golfers. Do not take the risk. Seek shelter or go indoors before the lightning storm and the rain starts. If you cannot go inside, keep away from isolated tall trees, wire or metal fences and exposed high terrain. Do not be the highest object around. Go away from your golf clubs, and cart . Keep away from water. If your shoes have metal spikes - then take them off. Do not raise an umbrella or a golf club. Try to shelter in a ravine, or valley. If thunder is expected take local advice about a place of shelter. Some Golf courses may have dedicated lightning shelters.

Injuries can occur in less drastic ways too. Here are some examples of situations where potential injuries could occur if proper care is not taken. lifting a golf bag from a car has potential for an injury to your back, shoulders and nick. Lift the load firmly and slowly without jerking, because it might get jammed. Keep the weight close to your body. Avoid prolonged flexed positions such as practicing the swing all day. Be careful when taking your stance -(addressing the ball) on uneven or unstable surfaces, such as the bunker , you could simply slip or lose your ground. Muscles that are not regularly used may not be flexible enough to respond to the unexpected!. In hot weather wear a hat, sun block. and sunglasses. Drink plenty of water, before you become thirsty.
